STARLIGHT PARADE
May 31, 2008
Official Starlight Parade Information
On Saturday, May 31st, we will once again remind the greater Portland area that there is an active organization dedicated to preserving our American history through Civil War re-enacting as we march in the
Portland Rose Festival's 2008 Starlight Parade. We have received awards in past years for our efforts and
we hope to make this event even better than last year by illuminating our entry even more! The parade route is approximately 2 miles in length with some gradual inclines so be
prepared to go the distance.
Civilians, dress your best with comfortable shoes and bring lanterns with candles and matches. Soldiers, bring weapons, leathers, accoutrements, and colors. Musicians, parade dress, polished brass, fifers bring lots of wind and drummers bring heavy hands. Cavalry on foot, and artillery are also invited to march! PLEASE BRING COLORS TO HELP FORM A COMBINED COLOR GUARD. Blue and gray will march alongside each other so both battalions get equal TV coverage.
We are entry #62 in 2008.
Forming Up: We will be forming at the corner of NW 8th and NW Davis, in the downtown area. Approximately the same area as previous years. For those unfamiliar with the downtown area, the parade comes down W. Burnside and we are forming 4 blocks to the north, in between 8th and 9th streets next to the parks. Our entry number will be posted on the sidewalk for those who arrive earliest.
Judging: The parade judging will take place beginning at 5 PM and continue until 7:30. Final judging takes place along the route and winners will be notified by mail.
We should be there no later than 6 PM. At 7 PM Burnside closes, so if you're arriving late you'll need to find your way around to the staging area another way. You must be there by 7 PM to be judged.
There will be no parking in the formation areas, all vehicles must be gone by 6:30 or they will be towed at owner's expense.
You must be at least 12 years old to march in the parade.
Disbanding: The parade disbands at SW 14th and Taylor.
Getting to the parade by bus
Buses will be available again this year, to take us to and pick us up from the parade route in downtown Portland. This is the easiest method to take and the most fun! The bus will pick us up at 5:30 PM and take us to the line-up area. It will then pick us up and bring us back to the original site. The pickup place is at GI Joes in Tualatin Please let Diane Nosbich know you are coming by email at misdi2004nos2006@yahoo.com to ensure you have a seat. There is NO FEE to ride the bus!
